El Tour está siendo un foco de noticias malas para el ciclismo español , devaluado por la operación puerto, pero esta vez las noticias son estrictamente deportivas. The Tour is a hotbed of bad news for Spanish cycling, devalued by the port operation, but this time the news is strictly sports.

Alejandro Valverde , jefe de filas del Caisse d’Epargne Illes Balears y uno de los grandes candidatos al triunfo final en este Tour de Francia, ha dicho adiós prematuramente a la ronda francesa al caerse a dieciséis kilómetros para el final de la tercera etapa que se desarrollaba entre Esch-sur-Alzette y Valkenburg. Alejandro Valverde, supervising the Caisse d'Epargne Illes Balears and one of the major candidates for the final victory in this Tour de France, has said goodbye prematurely to the French round to fall to sixteen kilometers by the end of the third phase which developed between Esch-sur-Alzette and Valkenburg.

El ciclista de Las Lumbreras iba en cabeza de carrera cuando un corredor se cayó delante de él arrastrándole en la caída. A los pocos minutos el murciano fue evacuado hacia el Hospital Universitario de Maastricht para someterse al pertinente examen médico donde se ha confirmado  que tenía una fractura en su clavícula derecha. Además de Valverde, otros afectados gravemente por las caídas de la etapa fueron el holandés Erik Dekker (Rabobank), que sufre un fuerte golpe en la cara y el maxilar por lo que fue trasladado al hospital de Verviers donde fue sometido a un scanner cerebral para ver el alcance exacto de sus lesiones. In addition to Valverde, other severely affected by falls of the stage were the Dutchman Erik Dekker (Rabobank), who suffers a sharp blow to the face and jaw so it was transferred to hospital in Verviers where he was subjected to a brain scanner to see the exact extent of their injuries. También el estadounidense Fred Rodríguez (Davitamon) tuvo que ser evacuado al hospital de Verviers donde se le ha apreciado traumatismo en la espalda y en el codo derecho.
